  • Stock photo: This is a Hobo spider ’inviting’ a carpenter ant in for dinner. Now found throughout the Pacific NW,U.S.,they are not native here but established themselves after it is thought they hitched a ride on cargo ships from Europe. Their bite is often blamed on Brown Recluse spiders which are found in the south central U.S.. The Hobo spider can inflict a serious bite that becomes lesionous. It is a member of the Funnel Web Weavers spiders, making a web that is not sticky,but used as a tripwire.It then moves quickly to grab it’s prey.

Question is, is this responsible for all the leaf damage, or does it consume the leaf-eaters?Whatever, it’s about 3/4 inch long.

  • Stock photo: Something (I think) from the Katydid group of grasshopper relatives. I had been looking all morning for critters in reed beds, grass and so on and not had much luck. Turned around and couldn’t believe my eyes at first. Full extended it was about 8cm in length (if memory serves)... those are very long legs.
